What is an A-record? How do I create / change it?

Have in mind it can take some time before any DNS changes take effect. Say for an A-record, CNAME, MX-record, TXT-record – It could easily take up to 4 hours. For name servers – it is about 24 hours. Occasionally it could reach up to 36 hours.

A-record, or Address Record gives information about your host/domain name IP address. It is the link, the connection between your website’s name and the IP address of the machine your files are on.

In practice, if your domain name is not registered with the same company it is hosted with, you will need to inform yourself about the hosting server’s IP address and set it up as an A-record with the help of your registrar.

If you would like to change the A-record for a domain name, registered with us, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in your My Combell hosting control panel (https://my.combell.com/en).

  2. At the top follow 'My Products' > 'DNS & Forwarding management'.

    My Products

  3. Here you see a list of your domain names and type if DNS records they (might) have. Click on the 'A' button.

  4. You will see all A-records corresponding to the domain name.

  5. To edit your current A-record:

    1. If you are sure what you are doing, track the host you would like to change and click on 'Edit'.

    2. Put in the new IP address, and, if you have to, change the Time To Live (TTL).

IP address + Time To Live (TTL)

    3. Hit '+ Save'.

    4. Congratulations! You are done. Have in mind the record may take some time to take effect.

  6. To add a new A-record:

    1. Scroll to the bottom. Name the subdomain in the left text field or leave it empty if you would like to create the A-record for the domain name itself.

    2. Enter the IP address in the right text field.

    3. Change the Time To Live (TTL) if you have to.

IP address + Time To Live (TTL)

    4. Click on '+ Add'.

    5. Congratulations! You are done. Have in mind the record may take some time to take effect.
